What Do Guests Actually Remember About Your Wedding?
When you're planning a wedding, it's so easy to get caught up in the details. The colour of the napkins, the wording on the welcome sign, and whether you need wedding favours, what goes on the tables and the list goes on!
Don't get us wrong, we love the details. They're part of what makes each wedding different and can be a great way to bring your personality into the day.
But remember, the things you spend the most time worrying about aren't necessarily the things your wedding guests will remember.
So, what do guests actually talk about after a wedding?
How the wedding felt

This is probably the biggest one. Guests remember the atmosphere. They remember a wedding that felt relaxed and full of laughter. They remember seeing two people they care about having an incredible time. They remember the emotional ceremony, the hilarious speech, catching up with people they haven't seen for years and the dance floor at the end of the night.
They might not remember exactly what your centrepieces looked like, but they'll remember the atmosphere. Ultimately, isn't that what you want?
The food

Wedding guests absolutely remember good food.
But good doesn't necessarily mean elaborate or expensive. It's food that tastes great, there's enough of it and your guests aren't left wondering when they're going to be fed next.
Think about the whole day rather than just dinner. If your ceremony is at 2pm and dinner isn't until 6pm, what's happening in between? Are there canapés or something else to eat while you're off having photos?
Hungry guests are definitely more likely to remember being hungry than they are to remember what colour your table linen was!
The drinks

Much like food, this is less about what you're serving and more about the overall experience. Your guests probably aren't going to judge you because you didn't serve a particular brand of wine or expensive champagne.
What they'll notice is whether they can easily get a drink without standing in line for ages, and whether you've thought about the people who aren't drinking alcohol too.
Great non-alcoholic options have come a long way from simply offering someone a glass of orange juice, and it's lovely to make those guests feel like they've been considered too.
The speeches

Speeches are responsible for some of the most memorable moments at weddings. The stories nobody knew were going to be told. The emotions, the laughter, the perfectly timed joke and the slightly embarrassing childhood story.
These are the moments people repeat afterwards. Speeches don't need to be long to be memorable. In fact, we'd argue the opposite! A few heartfelt words will usually be remembered much more fondly than a speech that goes on for 25 minutes.
The music and the dance floor
There's something about a packed wedding dance floor that people remember. The song that gets everyone up, a guest suddenly revealing dance moves nobody knew they had and everyone singing loudly to a well known song.
That doesn't mean you need a particular type of entertainment or that every wedding needs to end with a huge party. It's about creating an atmosphere that feels like you and that your guests can enjoy being part of.

The things that weren't planned
Some of the best wedding moments are the ones that weren't on the timeline. The flower girl who decides she's absolutely not walking down the aisle, the unexpected comment during a speech that has the whole room in hysterics, the weather that doesn't quite cooperate, the spontaneous singalong, the emotions during the ceremony.
When you're planning your wedding, these can be the moments you're trying desperately to avoid. You want everything to go exactly as planned. But they're often the stories everyone tells.
A wedding doesn't need to be perfect to be memorable. In fact, sometimes it's the imperfections that make it memorable.
Feeling comfortable and looked after
This one isn't particularly glamorous, but it matters. Guests notice when they're comfortable. They notice when there's somewhere to sit, when they know where they're supposed to go, when they're not left standing around for hours, when they're warm enough, when there's plenty of water available and when the day flows easily from one part to the next.
So, what don't wedding guests remember?
This doesn't mean your styling and details don't matter.
They absolutely do. Your flowers, stationery, table styling, signage and all those beautiful little touches come together to create the overall look and feel of your wedding.

But your guests probably aren't going home discussing whether your napkins were sage or olive green. They're unlikely to remember whether every piece of signage used exactly the same font. They won't know that the flowers weren't quite the shade you originally pictured. And they're definitely not going to know that something happened seven minutes later than it said on your wedding timeline.
Focus on how you want people to feel when you're making decisions about your wedding. Spend money on the flowers because you adore flowers. Choose beautiful stationery because you love beautiful stationery. Have personalised favours because making them brings you joy.
Those things are part of creating a wedding that feels like yours.
But if you're agonising over a tiny detail because you think your guests will notice if you get it wrong, there's a good chance they won't.

The most memorable weddings aren't necessarily the ones with the most elaborate styling, the biggest budgets or the most perfectly planned details. They're the ones where people are comfortable, well fed, have something good in their glass and are surrounded by people they love. They're the weddings filled with laughter & emotion.
And most importantly, they're the weddings where the couple themselves are having a wonderful time.
